On 2nd March, Jackie and I attended a new venture, one to unite the marshalling and rescue roles at the racetrack. In the past, especially when attending meetings for other race organisations, the BARC rescue have been requested to attend a situation and on arrival, found the marshals from that post disappearing. When questioned further, they have been told by the marshals that this has been the policy of the local circuit. But it shouldn't be. All marshals and rescue crews should work together, for the common good of the driver/victim (remember - marshals get hurt too) and therefore Martin Hunt has set up 2 liaison days where marshals can meet the crew members, use the equipment they carry on-board their rescue vehicles, and get to know what the rescue crew are or will be doing when it comes to extraction or medical stabilisation. Regrettably I don't have any photo's from the day, but I can tell you the marshals loved using the spreaders and cutters, and by the end of the day were removing sections of old road cars at will. Additionally, the difficulty of extracting a driver using support boards from a saloon car was demonstrated, with the roof section being removed in its entirety first. Hopefully the lessons of the day will rub off on the marshals that were present, and they now have an understand that they are the first on the scene of an incident, and that once they have taken a role (e.g. supporting the driver's head) that they can see it through to the completion of the task, allowing the rescue crew to concentrate on all the other tasks they have to go through. Thanks again to Martin and all the other rescue crew members who have given up their time over the weekend for our benefit, as well as theirs. One team, united. |
