The 26th February 2002 will go down as a momentous day for me, as this is the day my freedom and independence increased without end!

Thanks to some major help from Simon Davis of English Ford (Poole), I was able to get my Motability vehicle sorted out.

As you may have read elsewhere on the site, I was originally turned down for a vehicle last June, on the basis that I only had a Disability Living Allowance award of 2 years from the DWP (formerly DSS). But after 9 months of an appeal, letters from my surgeon and GP, and lots of crossed fingers, I won my appeal and was able to go ahead with arranging this.

So this morning I went to the showroom and completed the last formalities.

And English Ford were happy enough to accommodate my non-standard request of adding some graphics to the car!!!!! Even to the point of sponsoring me by paying for the graphics to be done - thanks very much indeed. I believe I have the only Ford 2001 WRC look-alike car in the country!!!!!

Then it was out to the car for a quick show around the controls, especially the push/pull accelerator/brake lever I now use instead of foot pedals:-

And then it was off for my first drive in 20 months. And was I elated!!!!!! I definitely looked like the Cheshire cat who'd had all the cream!!!!

Our local paper, the Bournemouth Evening Echo, and regional TV company Meridian, both of whom have been following the story since the beginning, were both present to record the magic moment for posterity. The article should appear in the Echo tomorrow (27th), and the TV item on "Meridian Tonight" at 6PM, somewhere between tomorrow (27th) and Friday (1st March).

And the garage had something Jackie would be interested in too!!!!!!!!!!

My thanks once again to everyone involved in this:-

bulletSimon Davis (Motability Specialist), English Ford, for sourcing the car, wheels and rear spoiler, and making all the arrangements.
bulletPete (graphics man), for all the hard work you put in to make it look as authentic as possible.
bulletMy GP, Dr Dave Richardson, and Limb Centre Specialist, Mr Nigel Purry (now retired) for their correspondence supporting my appeal.
