Racers Across the Pond

Dave Franck

I had an interesting opportunity this month, along with my wife, Robin, and Robin Langlotz, your Race Board Chairman, to share stories and experiences with Steve Tarrant and his wife Jackie.

They were visiting Orlando from the UK and are both active in the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) with Steve as a Marshal and Jackie as a worker in several functions.

Steve gained unfortunate fame in the UK when he was involved in a horrible accident two years ago in which a formula car rammed his Marshal station at 140+ MPH. His station mate and the driver were killed in the crash and Steve was critically injured. He lost one leg and two inches off the other in addition to numerous other serious injuries. Steve is now enjoying life more than ever as he grows back from the brink of death.

They are both still active in racing events in the UK and in South Africa. We exchanged many stories and experiences about club and professional racing and had a great time.

It was interesting to hear that racing is racing the world over and that the problems of getting people to volunteer and to get along together are shared across the pond. Steve promised to spread the word of great fellowship in CFR to his racing friends back home and I look forward to having some of them attend our events when they come over on holiday. CFR now has new friends in the UK should any of us visit there.
