AN AMAZING ZANARDI IS FASTEST IN MONZA

Alessandro Zanardi doesn’t stop stunning.

During his preparation for the 2004 FIA European Touring Car Championship, the first full racing season after his horrible shunt at Lausitz in 2001, the Italian driver is testing every week at the wheel of his Ravaglia Motorsport BMW 320i entered by the BMW Team Italy-Spain.

Having shown consistent progress in the previous tests, today Zanardi emerged as the fastest driver on the second and final day of an all-BMW test in Monza. In a very cold, but dry weather, Zanardi was clocked at 2:00.95, a time which was only half-a-second slower than the pole position obtained by Jörg Müller in last year’s final meeting.

“It was a remarkable result,” commented team-manager Roberto Ravaglia, “especially if we think that Alessandro is still at the wheel of a 2003 car.”

Zanardi’s team-mate, Antonio García, was second fastest today with a lap in 2:01.07, followed by the two BMW Team Deutschland’s drivers Jörg Müller (2:01.18) and Dirk Müller (2:01.22). They both were at the wheel of brand new 2004 BMW 320i cars built and run by the Schnitzer Motorsport.

Both teams will return to Monza next week, for the ETCC official testing (March 4th and 5th), when Zanardi will drive for the first time his new 2004 car.
