The
BARC finals at Thruxton on Sunday was a sombre affair, reduced to just 2 races
in torrential rain, after the BMW M3 driver Mark Williams was killed during
qualifying.
Williams,
from Harrow, lost control of his car on the fastest part of the circuit, the run
up Woodham Hill, and crashed into a marshals' post on the 6th laps of the
qualifying session. Despite
the efforts of 6 doctors and marshals at the scene, Williams was pronounced dead
at the circuit 30 minutes later.
Amongst
the marshals who had to dive for cover at the impact and then tried to save the
life of the driver was Jackie Tarrant from Poole, wife of Steve Tarrant, who
lost a leg in an accident at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2 years ago.
Following
the accident and news of the fatality, drivers were asked if they wanted to
continue with the meeting and the BMW, Ginetta, KSport 1600 and Westfield
runners all elected not to race.
This
left just the Formula Renault and Modified Production saloons, both with titles
to be decided, as the only competitors to drive in the worsening conditions.
